چکیده

Introduction: Aqueous alteration of primitive meteorites was among the earliest differentiation processes in the solar system [1], and a better understanding of it would help constrain and test models of the thermal and chemical evolution of planetesimals. One of the challenges is to establish the temperatures of alteration. Petrographic analysis of CM matrices [2] suggest their temperatures of aqueous alteration were below 125˚C, and broadly similar upper limits (<170˚C) are suggested by the presence of tochilinite [3]. However, much lower alteration temperatures, ranging from <20˚C to 50˚C, are suggested by oxygen isotope fractionations among matrix components [4,5,6,7]. But these oxygen isotope studies are only valid if matrix carbonate and phyllosilicate reach oxygen isotope exchange equilibrium. These phases differ from each other in Δ

Clumped isotope thermometry of carbonatites as an indicator of diagenetic alteration

We measure the clumped isotopic signature of carbonatites to assess the integrity of the clumped isotope paleothermometer over long timescales (10–10 years) and the susceptibility of the proxy to closed system re-equilibration of isotopes during burial diagenesis. We find pristine carbonatites that have primary oxygen isotope signatures, along with a Carrara marble standard, do not record clump...

Carbonate clumped isotope constraints on Silurian ocean temperature and seawater Î ́18O

Much of what we know about the history of Earth’s climate derives from the chemistry of carbonate minerals in the sedimentary record. The oxygen isotopic compositions (dO) of calcitic marine fossils and cements have been widely used as a proxy for past seawater temperatures, but application of this proxy to deep geologic time is complicated by diagenetic alteration and uncertainties in the dO o...

Use of Clumped-isotope Thermometry to Constrain the Crystallization Temperature of Diagenetic Calcite

We describe an approach to estimating the crystallization temperatures of diagenetic calcites using clumped-isotope thermometry, a paleothermometer based on the C–O-bond enrichment in carbonates. Application of this thermometer to calcified gastropod shells and calcite cements in an early Eocene limestone from the Colorado Plateau reveals a record of calcite precipitation and replacement at tem...

Pristine Pre-accretionary Signatures in Cm Chondrite Silicates: a Common Parent-body with the Co Chondrites?

Introduction: The Mighei-like carbonaceous (CM) chondrites are one of the most abundant and aqueously altered group of carbonaceous chondrites [1–4]. The organic molecules present and the effects of aqueous alteration have been extensively studied in the CM chondrites [e.g., 1,3,5]. As many CM chondrites are extensively aqueously altered, the compositions and formation histories of their anhydr...

Coexisting serpentine and quartz from carbonate-bearing serpentinized peridotite in the Samail Ophiolite, Oman

Tectonically exposed mantle peridotite in the Oman Ophiolite is variably serpentinized and carbonated. Networks of young carbonate veins are prevalent in highly serpentinized peridotite, particularly near low-temperature alkaline springs emanating from the peridotite. An unusual feature in some samples is the coexistence of serpentine and quartz, which is not commonly observed in serpentinites....
